Kathryn Woods, MBBS, MD
Kathryn A. Woods is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Woods received her medical degree from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, University of London, UK. She completed her residency training at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, and received Fellowship training at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK. Dr. Woods has received Certificate of Specialist Training (CST) certifications (UK equivalent of board certification) in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology, and was awarded an MD (PhD equivalent) in Molecular Mechanisms of Growth Hormone Insensitivity.
Dr. Woods' research interests lie in the area of growth, particularly the physiology and the molecular pathology of the Growth Hormone (GH)- Insulin-Like Growth Factor -1 (IGF-1) axis. Dr. Woods has characterized several pathologic mutations in the genes regulating the GH-IGF axis and has described phenotype-genotype associations in GH receptor deficiency. Dr. Woods was instrumental in the identification and characterization of the first documented human case of an IGF-1 gene mutation. This case provided important insights as to the role of IGF-1 in both pre-and postnatal human growth and development. Dr. Woods is currently studying other candidate genes that may contribute to IGF-deficient short stature and is also involved in clinical trials of recombinant IGF-1 therapy in human subjects.
