Jay Cohen, MD, FAAP, FACE, CEC

In addition to his position as Medical Director of The Endocrine Clinic, P.C., a 6 endocrinologist plus 3 nurse practitioner private practice in adult and pediatric endocrinology, Dr. Cohen is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Tennessee; Director of the Diabetes Advisory Panel at St. Francis Hospital; a consultant in endocrinology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; and Physician Volunteer with the Church Health Center in Memphis, Tennessee since 1984.

Dr. Cohen is board certified in pediatrics, with a subspecialty in endocrinology. From 1989 to 1993, he assisted the American Board of Pediatrics to prepare the Pediatric Endocrinology certifying examination. The first physician in Shelby County, Tennessee, to become a Fellow in the American College of Endocrinology, Dr. Cohen holds a diplomate from the National Board of Medical Examiners in four states. He is currently on the Editorial Advisory Board of Clinical Endocrinology News. He has served on the board of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. He is a member of AACE, ADA, AOA National Honor Society, The Endocrine Society and LWPES. He has served as National and Regional Faculty for Eli Lilly, Pharmacia-Upjohn, Merck, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Genentech, Glaxo-SmithKline, Pfizer, Aventis, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals; been a peer reviewer or editorial writer for Clinical Endocrinology News, Journal of Pediatrics and Endocrine Practice Journal; and is or has been on review/advisory panels for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare, and Prudential. He was recognized as Outstanding Teacher of The Year at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 2003 for his volunteer work with residents in the UT Department of Family Practice. He is on the board of the Memphis Jewish Foundation and the Memphis Jewish Home.

He was the honoree by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in 2006. He is the recipient of the 2007 American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists AACE Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award.

He is actively engaged in numerous phase 2 and 3 endocrine clinical research studies in areas such as inhaled insulins, new type 1 and 2 diabetes agents (glip-1, DPP4 and alpha and gamma dual PPAR agents and glucosekinase enhancers), novel osteoporosis agents, new androgen therapies and long acting growth hormones. He is a primary investigator into humanized anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies to potentially cure type 1 diabetes.

He is actively involved in strategies to utilize specific disease management programs to improve the health of people with chronic illnesses. He is on the board of directors of Healthy Memphis Common Table which focuses in this arena.

A regular speaker at CME and physician update programs, Dr. Cohen has also served as a media consultant on diabetes to U.S. News and World Report, Parent Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and Fox 13 TV.

He is the husband of 20 years to his lovely wife, Hallie, and has two teenagers (Rachel and Ted) who are actively in pubertal storm.
