For the past 40 years, physicians evaluating children with short stature focused on determining whether or not the child had growth hormone deficiency. Most children with growth hormone deficiency have low levels of IGF-1. This disease state is also referred to as Secondary IGF-1 deficiency. With the recent approval of recombinant human Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (rhIGF-1), the IGF system needs to be revisited and candidates for treatment discussed and debated.
